6 Myths About Online Education
Although, online education has been around for a very long time, there are many myths surrounding it. Here are some of the most common myths:
It’s all about textbooks
Many people believe that online courses offer the same materials offered in textbooks, which is untrue.
While there are some fake courses that offer the same materials offered in textbooks, there are many good courses that offer a complete instructional package. The package is usually committed to helping students to acquire knowledge and the necessary skills.
A good course goes beyond text and pictures and it harnesses the best that the web has to offer. Good online courses are also regularly updated and linked to new sites.
The courses keep students glued to the computer
Although, online courses are delivered via the internet, you don’t have to be glued to the computer the entire day.
This is because a good online course asks students to conduct case studies, read great novels, take samples from the field and practice the skills that they have learnt. This means that the students are given an opportunity to get away from the computer.
You can “hide” in an online course and never participate
Although, you will be studying from your home, there is no way that you can fail to participate in a class discussion. This is because if you fail to participate in the discussion your instructor will know about.
Students undertaking online courses have many platforms where they can exchange ideas. Some of the platforms include: e-mail, collaborative web spaces, chat clients, and threaded discussions. These platforms are very easy to monitor and the instructor knows who’s not participating thus you can’t hide.
You can’t transfer to other colleges
The fact is that you will have a lot of challenges transferring the courses to other colleges if you are learning in an unaccredited school; however, if you are attending an accredited school, you won’t have any problems at all.
You learn less from online courses
If you are learning in an accredited institution and the courses are properly developed, the course should give you the same results as the offline course. For you to ensure that you are learning the right course, you should enroll in an accredited institution.
Online courses are isolating and lonely
Communication in this era is very unique. This is because you can sit in front of your computer and communicate effectively with someone who is miles away.
This means that even if you will be studying online, there are many ways that you can communicate with other people. Some of the platforms that you can use to communicate with other people are: Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and e-mail.
